just for fun, i started my opensuse 10.3 VM and asked it to mount
the internal DVD, even though i'd left the drive door open. i was
expecting that that mount attempt would eventually time out, but i
left it trying for over a minute and it never gave up.
finally, *i* gave up and closed the door and the mount succeeded
within seconds. how long would that VM have kept trying to mount a
non-existent DVD? i'm just curious.
