You've mentioned that this is a corporate XP install. Which surely 
includes a virus scanner. Some virus scanners show a really bad effect 
on the guest performance it total. Especially the on access scanners are 
of interest in this respect. Try disabling that stuff completely to 
verify this or rule it out.
