I had a look at the forum, as suggested, and found a fix.
This will do until shared folders are working.
Here is a description in non-technical language for non-technical types like me:

In OS X System Preferences>Sharing I enabled Windows Sharing
and the dialog advised 'Windows users can access your computer at <address>'

Back in the Windows box...
I opened 'My Network Places' and clicked 'Add a network Place'.
I entered the <address> and gave my OS X password.
Lordy, Lordy! I now have a link in 'My Network Places' to my user space in OS X
and can seamlessly access and copy files across the great OS X/Windows divide.

If a similar approach would work to link Windows in the VM box to a USB stick
plugged into the Mac (appearing on my Mac as USB DISK).
Then I would be able to access/copy file here too. Anyone know how?
