I have not tried installing Solaris on my macbook, but I had the same problem with Centos5 until I updated the kernel. CPU usage went from 100% to around 20%. Ubuntu 8 is around 20% and Windows XP is around 12% without any modifications to either one. There were some linux kernel options that some people have said have helped with reducing cpu load: CPUFREQ=no nohz=off. Maybe there are some equivalent ones for solaris.
