If anyone is interested... With the help of Greg Nowak from the list, I now have a minimal working guest kernel config for the Ubuntu's 8.04 patched kernel sources, with networking+CD-ROM support (see attachment)
Unfortunately an initial ram disk seems to be required otherwise
Ubuntu hangs when running keyboard-setup, which means you also need
loadable module support, even if you want to run a module-less
kernel ;-(.
