Replying to my own post. Thanks for the help. I had no success getting version 1.4 to run under Ubuntu Hardy Heron, so I bit the bullet, removed it, downloaded 1.6 from the Sun site, and installed it. Everything I have tried works perfectly, including all my virtual machines.
