Yes, they are, thanks for taking the time.

I've had a reply to the same question from the manufacturer (or at  
least the Aussie importers...everything is made in China these days).  
They intimated that a VM won't work in this context, I would have to  
use a genuine Windows box*. This doesn't surprise me as I was using a  
colleague's Toshiba XP laptop today to extract images off the  
offending HD and noticed that even the Win box couldn't actually see  
the hard drive without going through the DVRPlay application. Every  
time I connect it to the Mac I'm told that the drive isn't  
recognisable to OSX, would I like the re-intitialise it? The  
manufacturer has done something seriously weird to the appliance.

*Or maybe Boot Camp.
Which raises the question: other VM software (Parallels or Fusion?)  
can use the Boot Camp partition installation as the VM, without having  
to reboot. Is this possible with VirtualBox?
