Pages 125-127 in the 2.0.4 Users Manual. I do not know about the terminology. I think if multiple guests have had vmdk files configured, as documented in the manual, to have access to the same range of bytes on a block device, VirtualBox is agnostic as far as what the guests do (if anything) to keep from stepping on the regions to which they have both been told they have access.
