Have you actually tried doing this? I just did. I have a physical
partition on my physical disk described in the vmdk file
~/.VirtualBox/Machines/Windows\ XP\ on\ partition\ 2/sda-mbr\,2\,5.vmdk
When I try adding it to a second VM I get:
$ VBoxManage modifyvm "Ubuntu Hardy (lustre test client)" -hda
~/.VirtualBox/Machines/Windows\ XP\ on\ partition\ 2/sda-mbr\,2\,5.vmdk
