If you dont mind wasting some disk space and running some
extra processes, I just use apt-get install Xvfb and apt-get
install x11vnc to get a VNC server running (not knocking
what comes builtin with VirtualBox, I just happen to use
Xvfb and x11vnc all the time anyway). For unix there is
a clean and simple ssh based vncviewer from the maker of
x11vnc at (http://www.karlrunge.com/x11vnc/ssvnc.html).

The main advantage for me of this approach is it works
for any scenario, nothing special to VirtualBox, and works
very cleanly with ssh and improved TightVNC and with
the latest Xorg server so I do not have to worry about
how uptodate the Xvnc or vncviewer software is from RealVNC
or TightVNC, which I have found to be spotty in the past,
at least the free versions running on unix.

I have not had the best of luck trying to run vbox in
headless mode, but it may all be working just fine now.
