Do you ever need to run ubuntu native?

How do you synchronize data between ubuntu native and
ubuntu virtual?  Is it possible to have a native (non-vmdk)
partition accessible alike between native and virtual
ubuntu?  Or can the native ubuntu mount the .vmdk?
