I think I need more data before I can point the finger at 3D Acceleration. As I indicated, I wrote a little monitoring script which is monitoring and logging my VM's memory. I don't recall when I had started my VM which bloated, but this machine's uptime is only six days. So worst case, the VM was running six days. My plan is to run with and without 3D Acceleration and log memmory usage. I hope it's that simple: 3D Acceleration.
