different hosts and guests.
Let's start with just two most common platforms: Linux and windows.
Hey, the universe was not created overnight. :)

If we get such a tool just for linux and windows I am sure
it will make the majority of VBox users very pleased.
OS-X and Solaris could be added later.

Seems you haven't searched enough - it has been done already using FUSE, though I have no idea how Linux-specific this really is. In principle FUSE is available on all relevant platforms.
