Seems you haven't searched enough - it has been done already using FUSE, though I have no idea how Linux-specific this really is. In principle FUSE is available on all relevant platforms.

Hmm, this looks like another approach, the page mentions a Linux ndb (network block device) driver.

I have seen something about the FUSE based tool in a vbox forum article http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=17574 I have tried out this program on my Linux system. but had no success with it. Got only errors which were already discusssed in the forum without a final solution.
