The current virtual video driver (in OSE) is not even DRI1-compliant. Work is underway (not yet in OSE, but just because we haven't got around to it yet) to convert it to DRI1, and DRI2 would be the logical next step. If we had decent documentation, it would make sense to skip DRI1 altogether, but since we don't and since there is more information and example code available for DRI1, getting DRI1 going first and moving on from there seems to be a reasonable thing to do.
