Here is a thought If running on Linux host.. BTW I haven't tried this yet :-) What if the virtual client image file was stored on a lvm volume. You should be able to use the lvm snapshot function to get a copy of the virtual client image file while it's running. Next backup the lvm snapshot by what ever means you want. Best part is your client system does not need to be stopped to get a decent backup.
