Aleksey,
    Adding the line to /etc/network/interfaces caused the interface to
come up and get a DHCP IP address from vboxnet0. I guess I thought
ubuntu would bring the interface up automatically if VirtualBox exposes
the virtual nic hardware, but it didn't. I had to manually
add the iface. Its fine now though.
