Yet again, the problem is with vpopmail.
Solution: Fix vpopmail.
This was fixed around release 5.3.5 (according to Michael Bowe's research), and vpopmail 5.3.20 and later should work fine with authdaemon. If it doesn't, then we need more information as to when it fails.
Michael is working on a 5.2.2 release that backports major bugfixes from the 5.3 series. We hope to have a 5.4 release (i.e., a stable 5.3 release) of vpopmail ready by the end of August.
