Mike,

I can't speak to all of your email, but yes, the single add/edit computer page 
is somewhat limited.  I've already committed code for 2.3 that will make it 
much more useful.

Currently, the only way to edit the private IP address for a computer is to do 
it directly in the database.  The public one is what you can edit on the edit 
computer page (currently).
