hmm. well, we don't have any obligation to maintain backwards compatibility since we haven't had a release yet. also, if they're writing a custom servlet against this library, i'd expect them to be watching the dev list for changes and be capable of making such a small adjustment. i think it'd be best to make it private now. unless i hear a strong objection soon, i'll just commit the change with a private constructor.
