Ok.

As I want to keep ant as the main build, the docs inside the distribution
and the package will still be built by ant. The maven build is (due to its
volatile nature in the reports) better suited for the web site and continous
development.

It should. In the ant build, there are two different ToC files
(project.xml and project-website.xml). This does not change. I just
told the maven build to use the project-website.xml file.

That's a bit tricky. "External" for maven means "not part of the maven built
site".

We should discuss this. IMHO it is as easy to maintain the xdocs with
maven as with ant (I'm actually building from the same xdoc source
here). The main difference is that maven is not yet that widely
accepted as ant as a build tool. And with m2 (oops mvn) on the
horizon, this might lead to even more confusion. That's why I want to
keep the distribution building, compilation, testing and everything
working with ant.
The maven build is a "goodie" that also helps us (the Velocity
committers) to maintain the web site.
