Hi, as some of you already know, I'm not really happy with the 1.4 state of the end user Velocity Documentation. As part of the ongoing 1.5 release, I've started to convert the Users Guide to the DocBook format and also set up a framework to render this into different formats: PDF and HTML in two flavors.
Over the course of this endeavour (which took me far too long but that is what you get for doing a daytime project that is not at all related to Java), I've learned more about XSL, DocBook and XML editors than I ever wanted to know. =8-) However, the fruit of that labor is now in a state that I dare to present it to a larger audience. I've checked it into http://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/jakarta/velocity/docbook/trunk/ If you don't want to try it out but just take a look on what it does, go to http://people.apache.org/~henning/docbook/ Personally, I'm quite satisfied with the result; I didn't know that the Users Guide comes to 36 pages printout (because I never dared to print out the web page) and having a standard format might even attract some people interested in doing documentation and not code because DocBook is actually a format that know more than a handful of people. I'd love to get comments on the results (I'll also try to get a better resolution to the JAI issue lined out in README.FIRST (please make sure to read that first, else you will not get a PDF)). Oh yes, and please take a look at the TODO list. Best regards Henning -- Dipl.-Inf. (Univ.) Henning P.
