This type of speciality role in Nursing is addressed by Appendix C Position Statement in the Alaska State Nursing Statures.  www.commerce.state.ak.us/occ/pub/NursingStatutes.pdf

I was looking hopefully to not having to "re-invent the wheel" with shared information from other facilities with documentation requirements already in place that could be reviewed by our Vascular Access Team, Evidenced Based Nursing Committee, Nurse Practice Council for "Best Practices" and then finalize working procedures and documents  for our Facility.  My thought was that this might include Nursing Procedures, required experience, didactic requirements, competencies,  insertion/maintenance/complication management, declarative decision tree for implementing this placement, action plans and education requirements for all acute care staff along with Home Based Services staff who would be caring for these patients in the community. Just a guess on my part, there is probably more that I am missing.  Also within our facility prior to implementing any practice change, meetings with Risk Management would be done to evaluate if the Hospital would allow this expanded practice.

With our facility having "Shared Goverence", prior to any inactment the Action Plans, documentation, competencies, and education for staff would have to pass through the Nurse Management Coucil.  I was just at a starting point envisioning a large mountain to climb and thought that someone may have already started clearing the trail.

I truely appreciate everyone's input.  Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New year.

Subject: question for the group: Neck placements of PICC Lines

I have heard that some of the PICC Inserters out there are placing PICC's in the EJ.  If so would you be willing to share what type of documentation your facility requires for that placement.  Is there any competencies required?  Do you have to document educational experience for placing PICC's in the neck.  Anything you have would be appreciated.  Please e-mail me with any info.

Thanks in advance.
