Hello Donna,
There are a variety of ways to receive PICC Training, in all levels: Basic, Modified Seldinger and/or Ultrasound Training (www.piccexcellence.com ).
Let's talk about your options! First I have a few questions 1. Do you know someone who is PICC qualified who can supervise you (or an MD willing to watch you do insertions?)? 2. Will you be able to do insertions at the hospital or through another route?

The reason for these questions is to make sure you do not waste your money or time on training without have the other components of certification in place. PICC certification is reached after completing the required curriculum (in a class or through DVD/VHS), performing a simulated insertion and then doing supervised insertions on patients to the point of competence.

Let me tell you a bit more about our programs...PICC training has been in a transition period for a number of years. There are many nurses wanting PICC training, but few groups willing to set up classes specific to any one place. As a result of the changes with reimbursement and not enough groups needing training, there are not as many classes. The good news is that there are some neat options for PICC training. PICC Excellence has a great Self Study Basic PICC Kit that includes a practicum. Yes, Self Study, believe it or not! It is a very comprehensive program with a full class on DVD or VHS. You could have it next week. In the past few years PICC education has changed so much.

What we see now are individuals needing the training rather than groups. More than seven years ago we converted to a Self Study format, a PICC Kit with a practicum and qualification/documentation logbook. The results have been remarkable; everyone loves the kit and tells us in the evaluations. In the kit you receive two video tapes or DVDs (5 1/2 hours of class time), a comprehensive 95 page manual and a practice documentation logbook. You work through the program by viewing the first Section of the video, reading the corresponding Section in the manual and completing the knowledge assessment questions at the end of the Section. You proceed through Sections 2,3 and 4, viewing the video, reading the manual and completing the questions. The 50 question post test is next and completes the didactic/classroom information.

To perform the practicum you will need a PICC qualified inserter to watch you do a simulated insertion and check off your competencies. The logbook provides not only a list of the Basic competencies, but also descriptions of who is a qualified preceptor, places to document all your supervised insertions and keep a regular insertion history. You receive 11.5 contact hours for the program. The cost of the Basic Self Study Program is $175 plus $16 shipping. If there are others who need the kit, they can reuse your videos and get a CE packet, we call that a refill for $125. The best thing about the Basic Self Study Program is that you get to keep the class, ie videos. I have been teaching PICCs for 14 years and always worried about class participants forgetting more than they heard, with the videos you can watch it over and over or refer back to it. More than that this program is much better than my one day classes, much more complete...it has to be it is a self study program. The best part about it is you get to keep the class, yes on video, but that allows you to refer back to it at any time which is a huge benefit. Rather than paying for a one day class that you leave with a book and some memories that are short term, you get the entire program to watch, to share, to review. Consider setting aside the same day you would have spent in class to complete the program. Our Deluxe Program provides Basic PICC, Modified Seldinger and Ultrasound Training equivalent to three days of education. I am attaching some literature and an order sheet for you to review. If there are more than 5 people needing training, then there is  the Deluxe Group Kit or the Basic Class Kit that are both more economical than the Individual Kits. The Class Kit allows you to teach a full PICC class with the aid of some qualified preceptors. Call and we can discuss your options and what will work best for you!

You can order on-line or with the forms I am attaching. Let me know if you still have questions

Your BARD rep could set you up with a course, they also have an online course that is good. I will be teaching in Northern Iowa but I'm sure that is a little far for you. We do have clinicians Farther North though Paul Blackburn could help you also. Charlotte Feckers RNCRNI -----Original Message-----

Does anyone know of any courses (theory and hand's on) for inserting PICCs in either the Canadian Prairies (Manitoba, Saskatchewan or western
Ontario) or in Northern US states, like North Dakota or Minnesota. Or any distance courses on the theory portion.
Thanks so much
Donna
