Title: Re: picc line consents
JCAHO.... written consent not required, but be sure you give and document that the patietn was provided appropirate information to allow making an informed consent.  and that consent was granted.

There are other supporting opinions on this....

Botton line --- when litigation arises out of an issue related to insertion of a PICC and informed consent is in question.... documentation is the evidence supporting that the patient was provided adequate info and allowed to independently make the decision to proceed with placement.

I am so glad you said "written" consents. I have heard of some risk managers that are now saying that PICC insertion fails under the general consent signed when the patient entered the hospital. I have never worked in a hospital where this was the case though and would feel better about obtaining a written consent for a PICC or any other CVC insertion. Are they doing the same thing with the other CVCs inserted by physicians? If not, I would have to ask why the difference? Lynn
