For those of you who place pediatric PICCs,

1) Do you give any sedation before placing a PICC? Yes, moderate
sedation is given by the IR nurse monitoring the patient while the IV
team RN is placing the PICC using modified Seldinger technique

2) If so, what type of sedation is typically ordered? Usually a combo
of IV versed and fentanyl, or pentobarbital and fentanyl. Versed tends
to give toddlers the "crying drunks" and make them more combative for
lack of a better word. In young infants, sometimes oral chloral hydrate
is effective.

3) Do you have this on an order set for PICC insertion? Yes

4) If the PICC is to be placed on an outpatient basis, would the
sedation ever be given at home before admitting the patient? No

Thank you so much in advance.
