Why doesn't he put in the access needle when he places the port and then places the dressing ?
We have some primary MD's which do not want the ports used right away if the patient is neutropenic or diabetic or on steroid therapy, they have seen an increase of infection.
Our IR people are using surgical glue for wound closure, so there is an additional barrier to protect the surgical site when you removed the dressing.
I would not access the port through the TSM; if he thinks he is going to have complications taking it off, wait untill he sees the complications after someone has accessed the port through the TSM.....

Need help quick!!  Have an attending who is new to our facility who states that when he inserts a new PAC, he places a sterile TSM over site and doesn't want anyone touching his new port.  Is requiring accessing THRU the TSM.  Has anyone out there heard of this practice???  Have a meeting shortly, so would appreciate answers ASAP.
