JCAHO has a "Standards Interpretation Center". The phone number is listed on their website.

I have called them about this issue and their response was that JCAHO's requirements for free flow protection were never intended to require the use of IV pumps for all infusions or to exclude the use of gravity infusion.
Which specific infusions may be infused by gravity infusion and which require a pump is up to your facility policy and should be addressed in your policy and procedure manual.

Hello Everyone -

Need feedback/specific info relative to central lines (short and long term CVCs, Ports, PICCs, etc), beyond the INS SOP.  Does anyone out there have recent experience with JCAHO's specific expectations regarding the use of pumps for central lines? (both hospital and home care)  This topic has come up for discussion and there are those have the expectation that all infusions given centrally will be infused via a pump, and then there those who say if a pump is cost-prohibitive then ok to gravity infuse.   I have my own opinion (of course ),  but would really like to have someone with recent JCAHO experience give me their impressions/opinion on this topic.

Any and all responses much  appreciated.

Thanks -
Nancy
