We actually do reuse our tubing on outpatients for 72 hours and it works well. It is clearly marked with their name and tagged with their discard date the same as it is with our inpatients. We have practiced this way since the early 90's and have not had a problem with mixing up tubing. Our volume of patients that we save tubing for is not that significant and if there is ever a doubt, we throw it away and start with new tubing. All of our meds are mixed by the pharmacy and sent to the Infusion Center so no mixing is done and there is no "med room"

I would be very concerned about safety in storing the tubing in
the med room and reusing it. There is no guarantee that it will
remain sterile and not tampered with or accidentally used on
another patient. It is difficult enough to be sure the patient
receives the right medication let alone having the correct tubing
hung. No studies, but seems like an unsafe practice. Patty
