Title: Re: tendon rupture
Darnell,

What medications/fluids, if any, were infused?  Age of pt?  Can you tell us more about co-morbid conditions (such as RA)?  How about the inserter?  New nurse vs experienced IV nurse?  You already stated multiple attempts were made.  Can you still see the puncture marks?  Sounds like surgery has been done, so puncture marks might be obscured.  I think we all want to learn from this one!

patient reported multiple attempts but, of course, nothing in the record to
indicate that

Yes, I am also. Don't really understand how the IV insertion could have caused this. Did the insertion go smoothly or did the nurse do a lot of probing? Not even sure that this would cause the tendon rupture. Please let us know the outcome! Lynn

site was note as "in dorsum of hand"  - surgeon's report "the common extensor tendons of the index, long and ring fingers were found to be completely ruptured"  no problems prior to IV being established - I am totally perplexed

Never heard of this! If the site was in the fingers, I would have to look at what they did to stabilize the catheter and support the joints. Lynn

Has anyone on the list ever heard of or know of a written reference regarding  the common extensor tendons of the fingers being  ruptured secondary to venipuncture?

Subject: needle safety

Have a situation where a family member wants the nurses in a long term care facility to use lancets for their mother that are not safety. Can anyone tell me how and where to find the law that states that all needle devices must be safety? Thanks in advance for the info as do not have the time to research on the web myself. This is why this site is wonderful, those of us that don't know can contact those that do.
