Title: Re: PIV flushes
I am not aware of any studies that have established a specific amount for flushing PIVs. There are several things to consider:
1. preventing contact between incompatible medicaitons
2. assessing the site for venous patency.

The last one is critical, especially for all vesicant meds which includes Vancomycin and promethazine, many electrolytes, etc. These drugs require a largest volume. For instance, I am familiar with using 10 ml before and after giving phenytoin through a PIV. Lynn

Can anyone tell me where I might find researched, evidence-based, "best practice" information on the amount needed to flush PIV saline locks. We currrently use 5ml (I can't even remember how we came up with that amount) of our 10ml prefilled saline syringes. This has to do with our barcoding of meds, and documentation in our Cerner program. I am also interested in what everyone is doing in their own practice.

Thanks so much,
