This is another issue that was discussed at the last AVA conference, and addressed by a lab person...she was specifically referring to the practice with blood cultures, but the same idea applies. Ellen Jo Barton of Stanford gave the presentation (she was excellent) and I believe she stated that is does not effect the outcome and she has researched hospitals that do discard and those that do not, but she recommended more study be done. AVA attendees--pls correct me if I am mistaken.

We use a stop cock and draw the waste into a syringe that is prefilled with 1cc of 10u/ml heparin and rotate it, then draw the blood for lab into the syringe attached to the other port. Then return hepranized blood, then remove stopcock and flush line as usual--never had a problem. However, in adults I have not seen it done Kathleen Mazza, RN, MBA, CRNI Director of Infusion Therapy St. Vincent Catholic Medical Center CHHA, New York [EMAIL PROTECTED] Tel.: (631)-851-4510 Fax: (631)-851-4536 -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Laura Cook RN Sent: Thursday, September 21, 2006 8:54 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Waste with blood draws Waste with blood draws form central lines. Has anyone heard of pushing the "wasted" blood back into the lines. I would think the risk for blood clots and the risk for infection would exclude this practice. Am I right....or am I right? Mind you I am not talking about a closed heparinized system like you sometimes see with arterial lines.........thoughts? ----------------------------------------- This message and any included attachments are from CaroMont Health Inc. and are intended only for the addressee(s).The information contained herein may include trade secrets or privileged or otherwise confidential information.
