The written word is not perfect. I
was at a seminar a while back where this was illustrated so
well by the repetition, out loud, of one sentence, changing the
word on which the emphasis was stressed. We all read with our own
"filters" in place. Try this simple exercise and see for yourself how the
implied meaning changes. You get the best idea if you do it out
loud. It's kind of fun to see how the implied meaning changes so
much!
I said I didn't know if John took the
book.
I
said I didn't know if John took the book.
I said I didn't know if
John took the book.
I said I didn't know if
John took the book.
I said I didn't know if
John took the book.
I said I didn't know if
John took the book.
I said I didn't know if
John took the book.
I said I didn't know if John took
the book.
I said I didn't know if John took
the book.
I said I didn't know if John took
the book.
I said I didn't know if John took the
book.
