We do first dose on most antibiotics with the exception of Vanc. We screen the
patients for past history of allergic reaction and if they have several
allergies we usually recommend they get the first dose in a more controlled
setting. We have and anaphylactic kit and the nurse stays in the home for at
least 30 minutes following the infusion. (Before anyone says anything about
developing allergic rxn with subsequent doses..., I know that patients can
develop allergies the more often they take a med (with subsequent doses) but we
teach the patient s&s and what do to if they develop during the first visit.)

I was asked to get info on First dose administration of antibiotics. Who
out there is in the home care or alternate site arena who can help me out???
Also what issues should I be prepared to address besides the obvious
anaphylaxis????
