I have documented some steps that may be helpful.

If possible do this when no backups are running. You may need to
de-activate all policies. This should give you a rough idea of the
steps needed.

Environment:

STK SL8500 with LTO2 tape drives, controlled by ACSLS server running
version 7.1. Netbackup 6.0 MP4, 5 or 6, 6.5 Windows Master and Media

1. Find the device name. Use the NBconsole administrator and go to
Devices>Drive display. Need the ACS,LSM, Panel, and Drive, plus the
Serial #?
ACS____, LSM____, Panel____, Drive______
Serial Number ___________
Drive Name _____________
Drive comment (EP BAY ##)______________
2. Using ACSLS vary the drive off-line
Login to the acsls server as user acsss,
Enter ?cmd_proc ?l?
?query drive all?
?vary drive <ACS, LSM, Panel, Drive> offline f
3. Remove any tapes from the drives using ACSLS commands (dismount
volID drive_id force
4. Delete the drive from Netbackup
NB console > Media and Device Management > Drives
Locate the drive by name (CC_LSM#_DRV#)
Right click and select Delete
At this point you will be asked which media servers should be restarted.
NOTE: If there are any backups running be sure you do not restart any
services that are in use. You should wait until all jobs are complete.
5. Physically replace the drive (Sun technician will do this)
6. Go to ACSLS and vary the drive on-line, note the new serial number
that shows up when the drive comes back on-line.

When the new drive has been installed, login to the media server open
?Manage Computer, device manager?, right click on server and scan for new
devices. Then check the tapes to see if it is recognized. Then update
the drivers , install the latest version. Check for any changes, be
viewing the results of the re-install/. Note you will get a list showing
a hardware scan listing all the drives, the detail will show you which one
is updated. Be sure to use the Symantec drivers and check the box that
says to delete all entries that are not available.

Continue:
7. Keep the Device Manager running if backups are running
8. Stop the request manager if you can or De-activate all the
policies.
9. Kill any running jobs (if you can)
10. Shut down media servers services
11. Shut down Master server Services
12. Using ACSLS ? vary the drive on-line (Note there will be a message
that the serial number has changed)
13. Note new serial number.

To add the new drive:

14. Go to the NB Console on bsmaster and use the Wizard for
configuring storage devices.
15. Get Library hostname for all servers.
16. Correct the name.
17. Re-activate all policies, if needed.
18. Change comment to show bay number and location

If you are unable to stop services on all the media servers, wait for a
time when things are not busy, and then add the drive to the remaining
media servers.
