I’m not suggesting making this DB a media server for other backups – just for 
its own backups.

Since my original post I’ve run across one thread where a user was having 
performance issues doing what we want to do because RMAN was not being 
throttled so it sounds like it is possible.   Some suggestions in that post 
mystified me as they seemed to imply that backing up across the network would 
use LESS resources than using the server itself as its own media server.   
Given that I can go at fibre speed to the tape library that hardly seems 
reasonable to me.

Jeff,

I would be careful about making a DB server a NBU Media Server.  It sounds like 
a great idea until you realize that you married your backup system to the DB 
server and it now has a dependency with the DB server.  You should weigh the 
alternatives and see if it is really worth the dependency to the backup system. 
 I believe there is a SAN Media Server license that will allow you to backup 
data for that server only.  Of course you will need the RMAN\Oracle license as 
well.
