This used to be the only way to resize a volume back in VxVM < 3.0, but 
since then a 'relayout' option has been added whereby you can turn a 13 
disk stripe into a 14 disk stripe (or similar).

Of course, a simple stripe has no redundancy and thus increases your 
risk of having to restore from tape, but you can grow things more 
incrementally. (Corrollary: if you have a mirror, you need at least 2 
disks to relayout and increase volume size)
