In case anyone comes across this with a similar problem, I left the subversion command line (which gave no extra clues) baking for about an hour, and I suspect the problems was one rather huge file that I had modified and was modified at the head too. Seems like the file really clogged thinks up. Versions is fine now, and I suspect that leaving it running on the file for a long time would have worked too, it's just odd to see a GUI app that gives no sign why/what is going on - always smells more like a bug.
