It turns out that updating these externals in Versions continues to fail with "PROPFIND request failed on '/repos/site/trunk/promos' PROPFIND of '/repos/site/trunk/promos': 500 Internal Server Error".
If I drop into Terminal and 'svn update' the same working copy it's all fine, and the password is being stored in Keychain, verified with Keychain Access.
