I have found the same symptoms as you running Snow Leopard and 1.0.5 (with the system svn 1.6 set): I notice my laptop getting hot, then notice that Versions is eating TONS of CPU in Activity Monitor (actually I use iStat Menus 2.0). I noticed that syslogd was also getting some pretty high processor time, so I opened up Console.app to see my console messages. It's chock full of this:

As you say, closing Versions the app does nothing to this process (1449 here), but it can be killed with the kill command, which is what I have been doing. This seems to happen every day or two for me...
