Further research... I am finding that many synthetics cannot be dyed at high temperatures, as the heat is harmful to the material. Colors are added to synthetics during the manufacturing process, not after the fact.
One site suggested using a product that is a thinned, transparent fabric paint. It probably would be just as easy to thin down acrylic paint colors. Still looking...
