Alan.........i'd be VERY curious to know........and i bet it'd be a HOOT to see
if........the Classic emerger pattern, The Usual, would catch you some nice
Trout. BET! it would............
Hook: any dry fly.....might wanna use a 1X long.....and try a size 8 for
Alaska.......just a guess...........hehehehe
Thread: Danville 6/0 Hot orange
Tail: Snowshoe Rabbitt gaurd hairs off the toes of the foot, and always break a
toe off the foot and work from that...........
Body: same material but use the underfur only
Wing: same as tail........and tye it in facing just a bit forward......alah the
old Haystack style to a degree, but not as radical
Head: Hot Orange
tye the wing in first.....bout a third the way back from the eye.........go
back to the bend and tye in the tail...........dub forward all the way to the
wing and a bit in front of the wing.....leaving the wing facing just a bit
forward. Tail should be a bit shorter than the wing, which should be shank
length.........tail is NOT a tail in the original conception and design of the
fly.........it's more a trailing shuck..........fly was originally designed by
Fran Betters, (a living legend in the Adirondacks of upper New York state), to
be an emerger...........Fran is also the originator of the Haystack series of
flies from which Bob Nastasi and Al Cucci bastardized, ah ah ah evolved those
into the Comparadun series.....yeah yeah yeah..... i know............O's &
A's.....lmao
don't dub the body to tightly...........if the Orange thread shows thru just a
little bit when wet............that's fine.........remember, we can only
"simulate" translucency................with opaque materials...........
i do a series called.....
1. the Usual
2. the Unusual
3. the Highly Unusual and
4. the Highly Unusual Usual
Number two is just the usual with a Peacock Herl body
Number three is a Usual with a CDC body tyed in by the tip and wraped stroking
the fibers back like a soft hackle, from about the third turn on.....VERY
similar to the way Hans W. does his CDC & Elk bodies.....and
Number four is any of the above, with a soft hackle of Hungarian Partiridge
tyed in as a collar in front.....THAT's my "Go To Fly" or my "One Fly
Tournament Fly"........for this fly you can forgo the dubbing in front of the
wing...........or use less.
The Usual and all it's cousins is an extremely versatile fly that can be fished
many ways and adapted all day long. You can loose the tail for a Caddis
imitation.........you can trim the tail thin and flatten and spread the wing
for a spinner.....you can fish it dead drift.....you can skitter it......you
can stipe it under the surface and it'll "Pop" right back up.......GREAT little
popper........and if you let it get completely waterlogged, it fishes
fantastically as the emerger it was designed to be.
