Buck Hall and I went fishing yesterday at Chinook pits - a series of strip mine pits in Western Indiana, about 20 miles from Illinois. WOW. The water was up, but on Buck's very first cast with a Chili Pepper, he caught the prettiest 9 - 10" bluegill you'd ever want to see. We were in for a great day. NOT!
To make a long story short, the ONLY fly that caught fish all day was the Chili Pepper. The bad news was that it only caught 3 bluegills. The other two were smaller. I fished very little because there was enough wind that I was spending most of the time keeping the johnboat where we wanted it. But it was a gorgeous day on the water with a good friend. And that's what it's all about. Allan p.s.: We had a good example of how much rain we've been having around here. On the way home from Chinook, we stopped past Lieber Lake (formerly Cataract Lake). We drove down to the boat ramp. BIG lake - what's that out there? OH. The fishing platform. Looked like it was 100 feet off-shore. I stopped at the gatehouse and asked how high the water was. He said it is 36 feet above the beach! And they can only drop the lake one foot in a day (it's a flood control lake). Good grief. THIRTY SIX feet above normal pool stage. And it's a big lake. Normally there's a 20 foot waterfall that feeds the lake. Even that would be 16 feet underwater.
