J, As I said many times, we do what works best for us. That is the only way we can be satisfied with what we do. I have several packers, the one I like most is Chris Helm's packer. It looks like a triangle bent strip of brass with a couple of notches in the front end. I have a few VHS tapes by Chris Helm and David Whitlock on spinning deer hair. Some are signed to me. Contact me off list of interested. Tony

To: vfb-mail@googlegroups.com Date: Sunday, August 23, 2009, 9:46 AM Yeah I actually do something similar, but I still hit it w/ my brass packing tool every 3 or 4 bunches. I don’t tie packed hair often enough, but I seem to have more even dispersal using the packer. Will send finger nail clippings next time I trim them. LOL Here is how I do it. After spinning the hair, take a couple of thread wraps in front of the spun hair. Put thumb and first finger, finger nails up against the hair with the hook shank between the nails. Now work your hand in a back and forth twisting motion while pushing the hair back against the last bunch. The wraps in front of the hair when pushed back in that motion will hold the hair in place. When you think you have all the hair you can get in the shank, work it back some more and you will find you can almost always get another bunch on. Another thing, I try to use the thinnest thread I can get by with. Most times it is 3/0. Hope this is clearer than mud.
