Hi y'all,
Just returned from a week in Montana- friends, fishing, sightseeing. Forest
fires have ruined much of my viewing pleasure (my fav. spots), so I had to find
new areas of incredible rivers running through fantastic scenery. Oh pity me.
:o) We had dinner in Lakeside on the west shore of Flathead just a couple of
nights ago, and from what I heard on the return trip, they were voluntarily
evacuating because of numerous fires heading their way. Fishing was so-so,
really need a drift-boat to fish those waters properly. Met some fishermen who
will take me next time I head up. Did catch a few cuts on dries, but maybe
missed a few takes while taking in the scenery.
Jimmy's poem would be a good idea for a swap. Set up howevermany odd-ball
materials from the list (10 -20?)and make a list of flies tied mainly with
those materials (sketch and name them, like 'burlap-sack humpy'). (The
secondary materials could be other materials from the list or not.) Each
swapper would select one fly and tie the appropriate number of flies and send
them in. The swapmeister would sort the flies and return them with a nicely
printed "A Fly Tying Fanatic" poem (the swapper could decide to do his/her own
if more convenient), leaving room on the top of the poem for mounting one each
of the swap flies, all for framing.
I've seen a lot of things auctioned off at the fly shows, and this would rank
as one of the truly unique fly tying hang-ups, plus another rememberance of the
VFB for long-timers.
I'll sign up as #1 and as designated 'sketcher' for patterns if needed, so
those who need ideas can see them on a hook.
Need a swap-meister. Any takers?

Subject: [VFB] A Poem for You Weird fly tyers
Speaking of weird, which was generated by
rick's quote yesterday, I guess I'm the weird
one. If my poem also describes you, then you're
definitely weird too.
Have a good evening.

A FLY TYING FANATIC !
Cotton balls, wine corks, tow sacks, I save'em all.
Craft beads, sparkle rope, doll's eyes, I'm walkin tall.
Mosquito net, you bet! And it's already green, don't
have to dye it. Just try it. You'll see what I mean.
Sewing thread, parrot feathers, and purple yarn.
I'll use most anything, and don't really give a darn.
Closed cell foam and balsa wood. Anything goes.
Why I've even used the lint from between my toes.
Candle wax, bee's wax, ear wax, I use'em all.
Soda straws, model paint bought at the Mall.
Javalina hair& belly hair from an Armadillo.
Why I even use eider down from my pillow.
Longhorn tail hair, my hair and hair from my
cats. I'll even use belly hair from a free-tailed bat.
Black Visqueen sure makes good beetle backs.
Cut'em out, glue'em on, hang'em on the rack.
Thus is the life of a fly-tying fanatic. Could I use
the fiberglass insulation from my attic?
I throw away nuthin. I keep all kinds of stuff.
With my kind of fly-tying, there's never enough!
