I got my new bamboo fly rod late last week, and from none other than Tony Spezio himself. Who-hoooo! It's really special to me, and I know how much effort went into it and how long it took because Tony has been recovering from some problems the whole time he was building it. He sent me photos of the progress all along the way, and it was amazing to see all the techniques and his mastery of the craft. I don't have to tell you how well the rod is crafted, as it's from a Hall of Fame Catskill Bamboo Rod-builder! Trust me, it is gorgeous- not overstated, just a classic beauty. But I did ask him for a spiral twist rod, and it worked out perfect. It has a lot of back-bone for punching flies into the Wyoming wind. And it has one of my #32s glued into the wraps at the handle, and my name on it, plus his of course, and a serial #. He made me promise to fish it, so it will be a dry-fly only rod for those perfect sunny afternoons on Wyoming trout streams. No wet-fly beads will be dinging this baby. Now I need a classic reel to match such a rod, and the perfect dry fly 5 wt. flyline. Should I look for a light weight antique reel worthy of this reel seat? Any ideas? Are lines for bamboo rods different than lines for graphite rods? Underweight a line size? Overweight a size? Is there a bamboo taper dry-fly line? And then I need an early spring and some hatches.
