They are destructive to trout reds I will tell you that. Carp can live in
just about any kind of water, including the clean cold water needed by
trout and I have watched in horror as enormous carp clean out reds from
recently spawned trout. I just don't like non-native species. Carp are
invasive species to this entire continent. They were brought over by
Europeans in the 1800
s. I would go so far as to say that all non-native species of trout are a
pest as well. Brown trout shouldn't be on this continent either. Rainbow
trout belong on the west coast. Brook trout belong East of the Mississippi
not in Colorado or Montana. People seem to think that because it is their
favorite sport fish or food, that they can introduce it wherever they
please. We have the snakehead all over the Potomac watershed and in 20
years this river system where I live won't ever be the same all because
some enterprising individuals wanted to catch it and put it on their dinner
plate. Look at what Lake trout have done to decimate the populations of
native cutthroats in Yellowstone lake. I go fishing because I stand in awe
of what nature provides for quarry, not what I wish it had. As far as I am
concerned carp make great lawn fertilizer.
