I'll take "nowadays" over the "good old days" any day LOL...Seriously, I don't see how ppl tied decent looking flies with NO bobbin, NO vise , NO synthetics.,etc ect. Chuck

You pulled a length of thread off the spool, pulled it through a round of bees wax and started tying the fly. You had to half hitch after tying in the material or the material would fall off the hook. There was no bobbin to keep tension on the thread to hold the material in place. The fly ended up with a lot of half hitches in it. It would no longer be FUN, and that would ruin the hobby for me. Just not worth it for the amount ppl will pay. Most of the flies I tie, I glue, or at least do a cpl of half hitches between EVERY step of the way. And because of that, they will outlast the Chinese tied Wal mart (and probably MOST fly shop) flies by a factor of 10 or more. But since the ppl can't see those extra steps taken by looking at the finished fly, they think "why pay more for his, they look just like "these") these being the Chinese tied) On a Wal mart fly for example, you unravel the thread at the head and the WHOLE fly comes apart all the way to the hook shank. On one of mine, most times, if the palmered hackle came undone, the rest of the fly could still be fished, because it was either tied, and/or glued between each step. Might not catch as many flies without the palmered hackle, but you WOULD at least still have a fly to fish with LOL...I'm not bragging, but my flies I tie, usually outlast the materials they are tied with because of these extra steps I take. It's sorta like the man who wears both belt AND suspenders LOL.. I could tie a dozen in 45 minuets after putting the beads on the hooks using a Norlander vise. I would get orders for 15 dozen. I can't do that any more and am getting too old to even try. The truth is that I just got burned out on tying for the shops. I know you'd get faster and faster with certain patterns, but in order to sell many, you'd have to constantly be changing patterns (I guess) which would slow you down. I don't think I'd have the speed to ever cut the mustard in that industry. Thanks, Chuck ----- Original Message ----- From: Jimmy D. A few VFB'ers I know sell via amazon, etc. But nobody;s getting rich at it. Chuck Alexander wrote: Folks: This is a question for ppl who have ever, or do now, sell flies. I have been searching ebay, and other sites, and the ppl on there sell their flies, mostly just pretty simple patterns for only 6/$2.99 up to about 6/$5.95 tops. Plus either free shipping, or 45 cents, or maybe 75 cents or a dollar tops. Now, any hooks alone that are name brand, unless they are having a great sale, are gonna run ya up to a about 15.8 cents each @ $3.95/25 pack . So, how do these ppl make ANY money at all like this?? Or are they just doing it to try to recoup some money on a hobby they enjoy doing anyway?? Thanks, Chuck -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the "VFB Mail" group.
