Hi Joyce, without sitting beside you it sounds like you failed to work the 
soft loop properly to pull straight down on the wings. If you have a copy 
of my thread booklet you'll see an illustration of this technique (if not 
let me know and I'll send you a pdf). Typically there is only a small 
section of each feather which is useful for marrying, particularly a 
specific length. The key is to practice with cheap feathers like turkey or 
goose.
