Tie the feather to the hook shank, attached hackle pliers to other end of feather. Hold the feather up and perpendicular to the hook shank. Moisten you fingertips then stroke the barbs towards the back of the hook. Also, pinch the barbs between your fingertips where they attach to the feather stem/quill so the individual barbs bend towards the back of the hook. Proceed with wrapping the feather around the hook shank while stroking barbs back. If they still stick out away from the hook shank more than you want, you can wrap over the barbs where they attach to the hook shank, the more wraps you place towards the back end of the hook, the tighter the barbs will lay against the hook shank.
